On April 21st, two jazz ensembles from Austin High School: Packer Jazz and Jazz One, have the opportunity to travel to Eau Claire, WI, for the Eau Claire Jazz Festival. Every year, renowned high school jazz bands perform at this competition and Austin is very lucky to be a part of that again this year. Jazz One is the audition only group at the high school, and they will be performing three songs for the judges and clinicians at Eau Claire this year: “Emancipation Blues”, “Europa” feat. Elijah Hirst on tenor sax, and “Buckjump”. The Sentinel had a chance to speak with Hirst about the upcoming performance. “Well we’re definitely about to send it. I’s gonna sound nice, and we’ve been practicing a good amount. It’s going to be good,” he said. Jazz One meets before school once a week and has been practicing for months leading up to this performance, and are hoping to place top three at the festival.
